From busking on the boardwalk in Santa Monica to belting songs in stadiums, Andy Grammer has always kept his head up. “Optimism is a personality trait of mine,” he says. “But as you get older and you get beaten down, it becomes a choice. Most of the greatest moments in my life have come from choosing sweetness, sincerity, and love when it would be maybe easier not to.”

That’s truly encapsulated in his sixth studio album, Big Stupid Heart, out this fall via S-Curve / Hollywood Records. A poppy, joyful ode to positivity at all costs — studded with cello and choral vocals — Grammer says the record’s sound “aligned perfectly with the message of the record, which is very much in defense of optimism.”

The first singles, “Best Hearts” and “Big Stupid Heart”, out July 10, are the epitome of that. Grammer penned “Best Hearts” as part of his new podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer. Grammer launched that show in April, inviting fans to call in and share a time someone showed up for them: he then writes a song in response, an act of his own of “showing up”. “Best Hearts” was inspired by a mother who left a voicemail sharing the strength and kindness her son displayed while battling mental health struggles, highlighting how he showed up for another individual in treatment, despite going through his own battles. “Can you write a song about people who are getting crushed but still show up for others in that moment?” she asked Grammer. The result is the kind of song that stirs your soul, lifting even the most jaded of spirits. As Grammer says, “the best hearts are broken.” It’s a celebration of hardship, struggle and life experience, viewed through the lens that it makes us stronger and more deeply connected to one another.

“When I get into my studio and I listen to these voicemails, it’s like a direct line to the sweetness of humanity,” Grammer says.

After getting discovered on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade in 2009, Grammer broke out in 2011 with his upbeat, sunshine-laced song, “Keep Your Head Up.” From there, he’s become music’s king of positive pop, with four multi-platinum certified singles and 8 total (gold or platinum), racking up billions of streams and nearly 50 national TV appearances, and spreading his message of light and love across the world. Recently, he’s also had songs go viral on social media, contributing to trends that have spider-webbed over the globe — including a TikTok dance to 2014 hit, “Honey I’m Good.” “People will come up to me and do the dance in the street,” Grammer says. “If you just keep making things that you love and send them out into the world, you’ll always be surprised at the amazing ways that the world uses them.”

Through it all, Grammer has remained committed to giving back. His 2016 single “Fresh Eyes” was released as a charity single to raise awareness around the unhoused, with all proceeds benefiting Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row in Los Angeles. In 2013, following the passing of his mother Kathy from cancer, he launched the KathyGramm Campaign with Tahirih Justice Center to raise funds for immigrant women and girls fleeing violence, honoring her lifelong dedication to women’s issues. Grammer tackled his own trauma around broken relationships with 2024’s Monster. “It’s the first album where anger showed up, and I didn’t totally know how to write about that before this moment,” he told American Songwriter at the time. “I don’t like to take up space in anger. I’m down to take up space to cheer everybody up, but I found that authenticity taking up space is cool. If you’re dealing with some of the stuff I’m dealing with, you can’t be authentic without being angry.”

Big Stupid Heart, then, is an evolution — not a return to form. Grammer started work on the record with the intention of countering the turmoil he sees unfolding worldwide with something sweet, pure, fierce. “There’s a tension and a divide that is just hard to be in the middle of at this moment in history,” he says. “I’m feeling all the feelings more than I ever have in my life.” It’s not toxic positivity, Grammer says, but rather a call to keep our hearts open amidst it all, even when true sadness finds its way in — as demonstrated in “Best Hearts.” Bittersweet, sure, but sweet.

That theme of positivity even in the face of the worst tragedies is woven through the record — take the title track, “Big Stupid Heart.” “There’s kind of a desperation at this moment to stay true to your heart,” Grammer says of the song. “This is a war cry to myself to stay open.”

It’s not all heavy; there’s the bouncy, cheeky, “Don’t Want to Fall in Love” about two friends who got together after one teasingly told the other, “Don’t hang out with me if you don’t want to fall in love.” “We need some simple, sweet love songs,” Grammer says. And “Happy Place,” a sweetly danceable collaboration with Walk Off the Earth. “Many people can fit into that happy place,” Grammer says. “My wife, my daughters, a friend who every time you see them, the world gets a little bit lighter.” Speaking of his wife, the sultry “Mysterious” is about seeing her with fresh eyes every day, even after 15 years. “Love doesn’t fade,” Grammer says. “It grows deeper.”

In the coming months, Grammer will have the chance to share his optimism with crowds both intimate and massive, playing everywhere from The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor to Montana’s KettleHouse Amphitheater . He’s bringing his one-man-show tour back this fall, complete with personal moments with audience members who want to share their stories. But, first, he’s heading out on his Big Stupid Heart tour in July, where he’ll blanket the country with sunshine and light. “When I was street performing, you’re out there every day, just being ignored, trying to find yourself,” Grammer says. “I’m still doing that today, even though I have an audience. I’m just trying to spread love. So, I cannot wait to go on tour and scream-sing these songs with everybody this summer. It’s going to be amazing.”

Tonight, Grammer will celebrate the album’s release at one of the country’s most iconic music venues as he will be making his Grand Ole Opry debut. The landmark evening follows appearances in New York City earlier this week, including a moving performance on Live with Kelly and Mark where he performed “All I Want Is You.”

Grammer also headlined the Susan G. Komen’s second annual Party in Pink Gala at Cipriani South Street on October 14, where Grammer performed in support of Komen’s mission to end deaths from breast cancer. The Komen appearance carries particularly deep meaning for Grammer, who lost his mother, Kathy, to breast cancer when he was 25. “This event means so much to me because breast cancer awareness isn’t just a cause I care about, it’s deeply personal to me,” Grammer shared ahead of the event.

Adding to an extraordinary week of performances, Grammer also took the field at the Savannah Bananas’ inaugural Banana Bowl on Saturday, October 10, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The wildly popular baseball-entertainment phenomenon brought its signature mix of music, dancing and high-energy spectacle to the championship event, streamed on Disney+. Grammer performed a high octane version of “Honey, I’m Good” accompanied by the Savannah Banana team, alongside a star-studded lineup of entertainment that included performances from the Jonas Brothers, Kane Brown as well as appearances from John Cena. On the release of the new album, Grammer said, “Somewhere along the way, we decided that being cynical makes yI ou smart and being sincere makes you a little bit of an idiot. Built around sweeping pop arrangements, choral vocals, soaring hooks and the cello-driven sound Grammer has spent years searching for, Big Stupid Heart examines grief, family, romantic love, resilience and connection through one central idea: choosing love even when you know exactly how much it can cost.

The album marks the next chapter in a creative evolution that began with Grammer’s 2024 album Monster. Where that record gave him permission to confront anger, grief and emotional wounds head-on, Big Stupid Heart explores what comes after. Its optimism is not naïve or effortless, but a conscious decision to embrace sweetness, sincerity and love after experiencing the full weight of loss.

“To get sincerity, sometimes you gotta fight through a jungle of cynicism, even in yourself,” Grammer recently told American Songwriter.

That tension runs throughout the album. The title track “Big Stupid Heart” is what Grammer calls “a war cry to myself to stay open,” while “Best Hearts” celebrates people who have been broken by life and still find a way to show up for others.

The latter originated through Grammer’s weekly podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer, after a mother submitted a voicemail about her son finding the strength to comfort another patient while receiving treatment for his own mental health struggles. Her question, “Can you write a song about people who are getting crushed but still show up for others in that moment?” became the emotional heartbeat of the song.

On “Love Showed Up,” Grammer looks at the unexpected clarity that can emerge after everything falls apart. Written for a friend who lost everything, the song centers on the people and connections that reveal themselves when they are needed most.

“All I Want Is You,” meanwhile, turns the focus toward Grammer’s own family, finding him questioning the endless pursuit of money, success and the next accomplishment before realizing that what matters most has been in front of him all along.

“I wish I was better at remembering this, but I can get pretty caught up in chasing the next thing,” Grammer previously shared. “‘All I Want Is You’ is a reminder to myself in song form that my wife and daughters are my north star.”

Elsewhere, the playful “Don’t Want To Fall In Love” offers a simple, sweet love song, “Happy Place” featuring Walk Off the Earth celebrates the people who make the world feel lighter, and “Mysterious” reflects on continuing to discover new sides of his wife after 15 years together.

Built around the unexpected clarity that can arrive in the aftermath of loss, “Love Showed Up” finds Grammer looking at what remains when everything else falls away. The song begins at rock bottom, with life seemingly changing in an instant, before turning toward the people, connection and love that reveal themselves when they are needed most.

“Then the love showed up / In ways I’ve never known / The love showed up / Said I’d never be alone,” Grammer sings, arriving at the realization at the center of the song: “Need to lose it all / To see how much I have.”

On the new song Grammer said: “I wrote this for a friend who lost everything. What I learned from him was, when you lose it all, love shows up in a way you couldn’t have imagined.”

Rather than romanticizing tragedy, “Love Showed Up” wrestles with the way painful experiences can permanently change how we see the world. Grammer acknowledges that he would never choose devastation, but also recognizes the perspective it can leave behind, including an ability to see light in places he may once have been too afraid to go.

That idea speaks directly to the larger philosophy behind Big Stupid Heart. In a recent interview with American Songwriter, Grammer opened up about the effort it can take to remain sincere and open-hearted in a world that can easily push people in the opposite direction.

Written by Andy Grammer and Ryan Marrone and produced by Jon Levine and Grammer, “Love Showed Up” captures one of the central ideas running throughout Big Stupid Heart: staying open to love after life has given you every reason to close yourself off.

That tension between heartbreak and openness sits at the core of the forthcoming 13-track album. Across Big Stupid Heart, Grammer explores grief, connection, family, fear, romantic love and the conscious decision to resist cynicism, pairing intimate songwriting with expansive pop arrangements, choral vocals, cello and the kind of soaring hooks that have become a signature of his career.

Speaking with PEOPLE earlier this summer, Grammer summed up the emotional stakes of the new record: “The album is about how much cost there is to loving deeply, and the decision to still do it.”

“Love Showed Up” follows the release of “All I Want Is You,” a heartfelt declaration about recognizing that the relationships already in front of us can matter more than the accomplishments we spend our lives chasing. The track earned a first look from American Songwriter, which explored how the song took on new meaning for Grammer following the birth of his third daughter, West Lizette, in June.

A heartfelt declaration of love, “All I Want Is You” finds Grammer taking stock of the ambitions and distractions that can pull us away from what matters most. After chasing money, success and the promise of a dream that ultimately left him unfulfilled, he arrives at a simple realization: everything he has been looking for has been right in front of him all along.

“Take all the paper and light it on fire / I don’t need the money, it won’t get me higher,” Grammer sings before the song opens into its irresistible refrain: “All I want is you.”

In a first look of the song with American Songwriter, Grammer noted the song and this new album have cello pop elements that he’s always wanted to explore: “I’ve been chasing the cello for my whole career. I’ve never actually captured it in a way that felt correct. This time, I was feeling very inspired with it. I just chased it on a bunch of songs on this record.”

The song follows the release of “Best Hearts” and album title track “Big Stupid Heart,” which introduced the deeply personal and emotionally expansive world of Grammer’s forthcoming album. The album’s lead single, “Best Hearts,” was inspired by a listener voicemail submitted through Grammer’s podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer. A mother shared the story of her son, who found the strength to comfort another patient while receiving treatment for his own mental health struggles, and asked Grammer to write about people carrying tremendous pain who still find a way to show up for others.

The resulting song became a stirring tribute to those who have been shattered by life and still choose strength, compassion and openness. It also reflects Grammer’s own experience of losing his mother when he was 25 and the years it took him to find hope again.

Following Grammer’s 2024 album Monster, which made space for anger, grief and emotional honesty in a bold new way, Big Stupid Heart represents an evolution rather than a return to form. Grammer began work on the record with the intention of answering the turmoil and division he sees unfolding around the world with something sweet, pure and fierce. It is not an exercise in toxic positivity, but a call to keep our hearts open through the full spectrum of human experience, including moments of hardship, sadness and loss.

“There’s a tension and a divide that is just hard to be in the middle of at this moment in history,” Grammer says. “I’m feeling all the feelings more than I ever have in my life.”

That mission is captured by the album’s title track, “Big Stupid Heart,” a bittersweet war cry about refusing to let life harden you.

“There’s kind of a desperation at this moment to stay true to your heart,” Grammer says of the song. “This is a war cry to myself to stay open.”

The album also features the deeply moving “Best Hearts,” which Grammer wrote as part of his podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer. The weekly series invites listeners to share stories of people who have shown up for them, with Grammer creating an original song in response as his own act of showing up.

“Best Hearts” was inspired by a mother who left a voicemail describing the strength and kindness her son displayed while battling his own mental health struggles. While receiving treatment, he found the strength to comfort another individual who was also struggling.“Can you write a song about people who are getting crushed but still show up for others in that moment?” she asked Grammer.

That question became the emotional heartbeat of “Best Hearts,” a stirring tribute to the people who have been shattered by life and somehow still choose strength, resilience and openness. At its core is the lyric and thesis “the best hearts are broken,” a reminder that experience does not have to close us off from the world. Sometimes, it can deepen our capacity to love.

The song honors those who have “stood back up” and still choose to “stay open,” finding beauty in the idea that the people who know what it means for the world to go dark are often the ones most able to recognize and offer light.

Monster sees Grammer elevating the high-energy, confessional songwriting that has won him millions of fans across the globe. Leaning into acoustic melodies and finding inspiration in the mandolin, the project explores themes of family, relationships, happiness, and letting go across 11 tracks.

At its core, Monster is Grammer’s most personal and sonically versatile album yet. Rife with vulnerable lyricism – yet still brimming with his distinctive optimism – the project is layered in dichotomy. It spans from catchy, uplifting anthems “Still Smiling” and “Monster,” that simultaneously reflect on overcoming darkness & the complicated nature of relationships, to bright, soaring moments in “Magic” and “Friends and Family,” which, in contrast, showcase the beauty and hopefulness in connection. Monster is a testament to Andy’s prowess as a songwriter, and artist, as he explores the human condition & all its complex beauty.

“My new album ‘MONSTER’ is about embracing the full spectrum of emotions, especially the uncomfortable ones like anger,” shares Grammer. “The mandolin’s unique driving sound pulled me into spaces I haven’t been before. I was initially worried that writing about anger might come off as negative, but I’ve realized that sometimes, simply letting others know you’ve been in the same spot they are can be just as healing as an overtly upbeat song.”

Earlier this month, Grammer shared the lead single off of the project “I Do” that saw him collaborating with award-winning country duo Maddie & Tae. Grammer’s soulful vocals intertwined with Maddie & Tae’s smooth harmonies throughout the song make it a standout collaboration between the three dynamic artists. He also gave fans an early listen of what to expect from the album with the June release of “Without You,”

Next month, he will embark on his headlining fall tour, ‘Greater Than: A One Man Show,’ kicking off in St. Cloud, MN on September 6th. The tour promises to provide a night of songs, poetry, and storytelling, with Andy performing both new music from the upcoming album and classic fan favorites throughout a special solo acoustic set. “I Do” sees Grammer broadening his sonic scope, fusing classic country melodies with pop production. The upbeat track explores the complexities and resilience of love and commitment with its honest lyrics: “even when I don’t love you, I do.” Grammer’s soulful vocals intertwined with Maddie & Tae’s smooth harmonies throughout the song make it a standout collaboration between the three dynamic artists.

The accompanying music video stars choreography phenomenon, and digital media duo, Cost n’ Mayor who have earned nearly 10 million followers across social media platforms from their viral dance routines and relationship content. “‘I Do’ is a song about relationships – specifically for me, my relationship with my wife,” shares Grammer. Written solely by Grammer, “I Need A New Money” grapples with the societal value placed on wealth and champions the idea that money doesn’t correlate to self-worth or happiness and that life’s real currency is love. “I think it’s crazy that we associate our value as humans with money. When I get quiet with myself, I am aware that my being – my soul – has inherent value but I can forget so easily,” said Grammer. “In our society, we are constantly being told that our worth is somehow connected to our net worth. I obviously know this isn’t true, but I am amazed at how often my actions indicate that I believe it is. This is one of life’s lessons I have had to relearn over and over again.”

At the onset of the global pandemic, Andy’s life changed again. His second daughter was born two weeks into the lockdown, and as months rolled on with future touring and recording more uncertain than ever, he did a whole lot of soul-searching and grasped for meaning. Through personal analysis, some very helpful therapy, and a lot of time with his family, he began to derive self-worth from within rather than outside of himself, which helped realign his approach to music in the process. Under the inspiration of this newfound perspective, he penned “Lease On Life.”

“This song speaks to the rare moments in life where I have clarity, where I feel like I’m on the top of the mountain and I can see for miles,” said Andy. “I’m always trying to get there. Sometimes nature helps, meditation, prayer or just time with my family. I need those reminders, we all need those reminders that there is more in front of us then behind us.”

On the track, delicately plucked acoustic guitar curls around his verses as tambourine and handclaps pick up momentum towards a bold bridge. It culminates on the chant, “Everything’s gonna be alright…got a brand new lease on life.”

“Lease On Life” notably soundtracks a major global advertising campaign by International Hotel Group (Holiday Inn Express, Intercontinental, Kimpton). The commercial has already amassed nearly 10 million YouTube views. Andy also premiered it on CNN’s Graduation 2021: A CNN Special Event where Vice President Kamala Harris delivered the keynote address.
