From busking on the boardwalk in Santa Monica to belting songs in stadiums, Andy Grammer has always kept his head up. “Optimism is a personality trait of mine,” he says. “But as you get older and you get beaten down, it becomes a choice. Most of the greatest moments in my life have come from choosing sweetness, sincerity, and love when it would be maybe easier not to.”
That’s truly encapsulated in his sixth studio album, Big Stupid Heart, out this fall via S-Curve / Hollywood Records. A poppy, joyful ode to positivity at all costs — studded with cello and choral vocals — Grammer says the record’s sound “aligned perfectly with the message of the record, which is very much in defense of optimism.”
The first singles, “Best Hearts” and “Big Stupid Heart”, out July 10, are the epitome of that. Grammer penned “Best Hearts” as part of his new podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer. Grammer launched that show in April, inviting fans to call in and share a time someone showed up for them: he then writes a song in response, an act of his own of “showing up”. “Best Hearts” was inspired by a mother who left a voicemail sharing the strength and kindness her son displayed while battling mental health struggles, highlighting how he showed up for another individual in treatment, despite going through his own battles. “Can you write a song about people who are getting crushed but still show up for others in that moment?” she asked Grammer. The result is the kind of song that stirs your soul, lifting even the most jaded of spirits. As Grammer says, “the best hearts are broken.” It’s a celebration of hardship, struggle and life experience, viewed through the lens that it makes us stronger and more deeply connected to one another.
“When I get into my studio and I listen to these voicemails, it’s like a direct line to the sweetness of humanity,” Grammer says.
After getting discovered on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade in 2009, Grammer broke out in 2011 with his upbeat, sunshine-laced song, “Keep Your Head Up.” From there, he’s become music’s king of positive pop, with four multi-platinum certified singles and 8 total (gold or platinum), racking up billions of streams and nearly 50 national TV appearances, and spreading his message of light and love across the world. Recently, he’s also had songs go viral on social media, contributing to trends that have spider-webbed over the globe — including a TikTok dance to 2014 hit, “Honey I’m Good.” “People will come up to me and do the dance in the street,” Grammer says. “If you just keep making things that you love and send them out into the world, you’ll always be surprised at the amazing ways that the world uses them.”
Through it all, Grammer has remained committed to giving back. His 2016 single “Fresh Eyes” was released as a charity single to raise awareness around the unhoused, with all proceeds benefiting Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row in Los Angeles. In 2013, following the passing of his mother Kathy from cancer, he launched the KathyGramm Campaign with Tahirih Justice Center to raise funds for immigrant women and girls fleeing violence, honoring her lifelong dedication to women’s issues. Grammer tackled his own trauma around broken relationships with 2024’s Monster. “It’s the first album where anger showed up, and I didn’t totally know how to write about that before this moment,” he told American Songwriter at the time. “I don’t like to take up space in anger. I’m down to take up space to cheer everybody up, but I found that authenticity taking up space is cool. If you’re dealing with some of the stuff I’m dealing with, you can’t be authentic without being angry.”
Big Stupid Heart, then, is an evolution — not a return to form. Grammer started work on the record with the intention of countering the turmoil he sees unfolding worldwide with something sweet, pure, fierce. “There’s a tension and a divide that is just hard to be in the middle of at this moment in history,” he says. “I’m feeling all the feelings more than I ever have in my life.” It’s not toxic positivity, Grammer says, but rather a call to keep our hearts open amidst it all, even when true sadness finds its way in — as demonstrated in “Best Hearts.” Bittersweet, sure, but sweet.
That theme of positivity even in the face of the worst tragedies is woven through the record — take the title track, “Big Stupid Heart.” “There’s kind of a desperation at this moment to stay true to your heart,” Grammer says of the song. “This is a war cry to myself to stay open.”
It’s not all heavy; there’s the bouncy, cheeky, “Don’t Want to Fall in Love” about two friends who got together after one teasingly told the other, “Don’t hang out with me if you don’t want to fall in love.” “We need some simple, sweet love songs,” Grammer says. And “Happy Place,” a sweetly danceable collaboration with Walk Off the Earth. “Many people can fit into that happy place,” Grammer says. “My wife, my daughters, a friend who every time you see them, the world gets a little bit lighter.” Speaking of his wife, the sultry “Mysterious” is about seeing her with fresh eyes every day, even after 15 years. “Love doesn’t fade,” Grammer says. “It grows deeper.”
In the coming months, Grammer will have the chance to share his optimism with crowds both intimate and massive, playing everywhere from The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor to Montana’s KettleHouse Amphitheater . He’s bringing his one-man-show tour back this fall, complete with personal moments with audience members who want to share their stories. But, first, he’s heading out on his Big Stupid Heart tour in July, where he’ll blanket the country with sunshine and light. “When I was street performing, you’re out there every day, just being ignored, trying to find yourself,” Grammer says. “I’m still doing that today, even though I have an audience. I’m just trying to spread love. So, I cannot wait to go on tour and scream-sing these songs with everybody this summer. It’s going to be amazing.”

“Best Hearts” introduces a deeply moving new chapter for Grammer, one rooted in empathy, grief, connection and the kind of hope that can only come from knowing true sadness. The song was born through Grammer’s new podcast, Showing Up With Andy Grammer, where fans call in and share stories of people who exemplify showing up – for others, for themselves, for their communities. Grammer then writes a song in response dedicated to those nominated, creating his own act of “showing up” through music.
“Best Hearts” began with one of those stories. A mother left a voicemail for Grammer about her son, who was battling mental health struggles and receiving treatment when he chose to show up for his roommate, who was also struggling. Even in the middle of his own journey, he found the strength to comfort someone else. “Can you write a song about people who are getting crushed but still show up for others in that moment?” she asked Grammer.

That question became the emotional heartbeat of “Best Hearts,” a stirring tribute to the people who have been shattered by life and somehow still choose strength, resilience and openness. At its core is the lyric and thesis “the best hearts are broken,” a reminder that experience does not have to close us off from the world. Sometimes, it can deepen our capacity to love.
The song honors those who have “stood back up” and still choose to “stay open,” finding beauty in the idea that the people who know what it means for the world to go dark are often the ones most able to recognize and offer light.

Monster sees Grammer elevating the high-energy, confessional songwriting that has won him millions of fans across the globe. Leaning into acoustic melodies and finding inspiration in the mandolin, the project explores themes of family, relationships, happiness, and letting go across 11 tracks.
At its core, Monster is Grammer’s most personal and sonically versatile album yet. Rife with vulnerable lyricism – yet still brimming with his distinctive optimism – the project is layered in dichotomy. It spans from catchy, uplifting anthems “Still Smiling” and “Monster,” that simultaneously reflect on overcoming darkness & the complicated nature of relationships, to bright, soaring moments in “Magic” and “Friends and Family,” which, in contrast, showcase the beauty and hopefulness in connection. Monster is a testament to Andy’s prowess as a songwriter, and artist, as he explores the human condition & all its complex beauty.
“My new album ‘MONSTER’ is about embracing the full spectrum of emotions, especially the uncomfortable ones like anger,” shares Grammer. “The mandolin’s unique driving sound pulled me into spaces I haven’t been before. I was initially worried that writing about anger might come off as negative, but I’ve realized that sometimes, simply letting others know you’ve been in the same spot they are can be just as healing as an overtly upbeat song.”

Earlier this month, Grammer shared the lead single off of the project “I Do” that saw him collaborating with award-winning country duo Maddie & Tae. Grammer’s soulful vocals intertwined with Maddie & Tae’s smooth harmonies throughout the song make it a standout collaboration between the three dynamic artists. He also gave fans an early listen of what to expect from the album with the June release of “Without You,”
Next month, he will embark on his headlining fall tour, ‘Greater Than: A One Man Show,’ kicking off in St. Cloud, MN on September 6th. The tour promises to provide a night of songs, poetry, and storytelling, with Andy performing both new music from the upcoming album and classic fan favorites throughout a special solo acoustic set. “I Do” sees Grammer broadening his sonic scope, fusing classic country melodies with pop production. The upbeat track explores the complexities and resilience of love and commitment with its honest lyrics: “even when I don’t love you, I do.” Grammer’s soulful vocals intertwined with Maddie & Tae’s smooth harmonies throughout the song make it a standout collaboration between the three dynamic artists.
The accompanying music video stars choreography phenomenon, and digital media duo, Cost n’ Mayor who have earned nearly 10 million followers across social media platforms from their viral dance routines and relationship content. This real-life couple takes viewers on a journey of a heartwarming love story told through choreography, intertwined with a performance from Grammer and Maddie & Tae, culminating in an epic performance by Cost n’ Mayor and their dance troupe.
“‘I Do’ is a song about relationships – specifically for me, my relationship with my wife,” shares Grammer. It marks the first official collaboration between longtime friends Andy Grammer and 3x GRAMMY Award-winning multiplatinum a cappella phenomenon Pentatonix. He just recently spoke at the group’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony—and yet, little did the world know, this anthem was on the way! Written solely by Grammer, “I Need A New Money” grapples with the societal value placed on wealth and champions the idea that money doesn’t correlate to self-worth or happiness and that life’s real currency is love. “I think it’s crazy that we associate our value as humans with money. When I get quiet with myself, I am aware that my being – my soul – has inherent value but I can forget so easily,” said Grammer. “In our society, we are constantly being told that our worth is somehow connected to our net worth. I obviously know this isn’t true, but I am amazed at how often my actions indicate that I believe it is. This is one of life’s lessons I have had to relearn over and over again.”

“I wrote this song about my godmother Leigh who really showed up for me to all the big and small life things after my mother passed away when I was 25,” said Andy. “It’s been amazing seeing people connect to the song so I wanted to give tribute to people who have shown up in the lives of my fans as well in the video.”

June 28, 2021 (Los Angeles, CA) – Acclaimed multi-platinum pop singer and songwriter Andy Grammer is back to engage, energize and empower audiences with his anthemic new song “Lease On Life.” The track is available everywhere today via Giant Soul/S-Curve/Hollywood Records.

At the onset of the global pandemic, Andy’s life changed again. His second daughter was born two weeks into the lockdown, and as months rolled on with future touring and recording more uncertain than ever, he did a whole lot of soul-searching and grasped for meaning. Through personal analysis, some very helpful therapy, and a lot of time with his family, he began to derive self-worth from within rather than outside of himself, which helped realign his approach to music in the process. Under the inspiration of this newfound perspective, he penned “Lease On Life.”
“This song speaks to the rare moments in life where I have clarity, where I feel like I’m on the top of the mountain and I can see for miles,” said Andy. “I’m always trying to get there. Sometimes nature helps, meditation, prayer or just time with my family. I need those reminders, we all need those reminders that there is more in front of us then behind us.”
On the track, delicately plucked acoustic guitar curls around his verses as tambourine and handclaps pick up momentum towards a bold bridge. It culminates on the chant, “Everything’s gonna be alright…got a brand new lease on life.”

“Lease On Life” notably soundtracks a major global advertising campaign by International Hotel Group (Holiday Inn Express, Intercontinental, Kimpton). The commercial has already amassed nearly 10 million YouTube views. Andy also premiered it on CNN’s Graduation 2021: A CNN Special Event where Vice President Kamala Harris delivered the keynote address.
